Rituparno Ghosh was the director, writer, lyricist and actor who redefined Bengali cinema. He became Bengal’s most well known filmmaker since Satyajit Ray, Mrinal Sen and Ritwick Ghatak. His contribution to Indian cinema will be remembered forever. The filmmaker was born on 31 August 1963, in a Bengali Hindu family. He did his schooling from South Point High School, and studied economics from Jadavpur University. Before filmmaking, he used to work at Response India advertising agency.
Film career
He made his debut as a director in a feature film, Hirer Angti in 1992. His very second film, Unishe April won two National Film Awards in 1995. His films received both critical acclaim as well as commercial success. His next film Dahan was based on a true story. Story of a woman molested in Kolkata. Ghosh won National Award for Best Direction for Utsab. Kirron Kher won the National Film Award for Best Actress for Bariwali. Asukh, won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Bengali. He released Chokher Bali in the year 2003 starring Aishwarya Rai. He again worked with Aishwarya Rai in Raincoat which was Rituparno Ghosh’s first Hindi film. It received National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Hindi. In 2007, he worked with Amitabh Bachchan in The Last Lear. Khela was Manisha Koirala's debut in Bengali cinema. Shob Charitro Kalponik, starred Bipasha Basu and Prosenjit, which won the National Award for Best Film in Bengali. He won the National film award for Best Director in Bengali for Abohoman. His last finished production work was Satyanweshi.
Acting career
Rituparno Ghosh first appeared on-screen as an actor in an Oriya film, Katha Deithilli Ma Ku. He also acted in Bengali films like, Arekti Premer Golpo by Kaushik Ganguly that dealt with gay relationships, and performed beautifully in Memories in March directed by Sanjoy Nag. Chitrangada was his last film that was released and it won the special jury award at the 60th National Film Awards.
Death
He suffered from diabetes mellitus for ten years and pancreatitis for five years. He also had insomnia and was taking medication for it. According to his doctor who was treating him for almost two decades said, he was facing complications from hormone treatments after breast implants and abdominoplasty which he underwent for his role in Arekti Premer Golpo, where he played the role of a transgender filmmaker. Due to a massive heart attack on 30 May 2013, he was declared dead. The death of such talent shook the whole film industry and the whole country mourned over his death.
